Question 4.2 Tach Switch

I want a tach I did some reading on the forum search and found that an instrument cluster from one vehicle can be put into mine. What would be the ideal model to swap in? Explorer, Expedition? I have a 98 4.2L XL automatic with mechanical odometer.

By the way, does anybody have pics or instructions of such a swap?
Thanks

It should plug right in, unless Ford is doing things differently these days. My old Escort going from a simple speedo plus dummy lights to a speedo tach and gauges was just a matter of swapping clusters and putting oil pressure and temp senders in place of the dummy switches, all wiring there.
Same with my 95 Ranger. No tach from factory, but wiring is there with the plug already set up for it.
Just get a cluster from the same year V6 truck with the tach and put it in.

I have had an expedition cluster in my truck for about 6 months with no problem. You can find them on ebay usually under $100.

Would this one fit? It's a 97 though.

Get an instrument cluster from a 97 or 98, take yours out, make sure all the cluster light are in the one you want to put in, install instrument cluster in truck and happy motoring. The 97/98's do not have the pats in them so a cluster swap is easy. Just make sure it's from the right trans: auto to auto/manual to manual, the whole thing takes about 30 minutes.

Thanks guys! I think I'll try a local "pick-a-parts" place first.

F150online rocks!

I understand that an auto-to-auto trans is necessary, but does it matter if the doner cluster comes from a V8 rather than a V6?
