I have a '97 F150 XL w/ the 4.2L V-6 and 4 speed automatic transmission.
After the transmission began a loud whinning, I took in in to my Ford dealership. They told me it had to go, and I had to purchase a "new" rebuilt" transmission for $2,200+!!! The thing is that the truck only had 41,000 miles on it and it was only 3 years old.
Has anyone else had problem with their automatics at such low mileage??? Or is mine just a lemon?

I have worked for Ford for over twenty years, I have seen them go out with a couple hundred miles on them, I have seen them last for 225 thousand like mine. There are dozens of little parts that can go bad at any time, because your tranny went out at low miles does not mean you have a lemon, service the darn thing every fifteen thousand miles or once a year for the best chance of making it last, and always replace the filter.

Can you maybe clarify something for me that I find confusing? I have tended to get my transmissions flushed rather than simply drained. Some people say change the filter when you do that and others say not to bother. Do you recommend a filter change when flushing the tranny?

Change the filter ! If your going to put in clean fluid you should replace the filter. Over time the filter may become cloged and then it would get bypassed making the filter useless.
And if you change filter and fluid at the mileage the MoCo recommends you may be able to dectect any problems (burnt fluid or stuff in the filter) before something breaks.
Most problems can be avoided if you service your trans "most people don't.
I would ask around and find a good trans shop in your area to service your trans, the dealership can get expensive with most repairs.
But in my opinion you got a pretty fair price on your remanufactured tranny from a dealer.

Have you ever seen a filter clog? I've looked at a lot of filters, some with very high miles. They only clog when the transmission self destructs.
Also, if one did clog, how would it be bypassed? There is no bypass in the system.

Personally, I run the first interval, drop the pan and change the filter and fluid, and then just run flushes after that. I've never had a tranny related failure in any of my vehicles.
