Temp Probe Placement
Temp Probe Placement
Does anyone know the best place for the temp probe placement for the electrical tranny temp gauge? I've read different threads here and I think the cooler line as it goes into the radiator would be a good place. Mike Troyer suggested the pan. I read another post where they said there was a port on the tranny itself. Has anyone used that placement? Might be the easiest, just wondering.
Thanks,
John

Not at the moment on install pics. The hex headed pipe plug is about a 1/2" head size as I recall. Somebody should have a pic of it.
It's snowing here and 27*. I'm not that enthusiastic about crawling under it with a camera at the moment. I wiil if nobody else can help you though.

Aw please!!
I though it was bad when I was in Florida last week and it was upper 50's low 60's. Came home Sunday to 18 and snow flurries. Suddenly 50's felt like a heat wave. No need to get under there now. If you have an opportunity in the future to take a pic, it'd be great.
I appreciate all your info. I want to try and do the install myself. How far does the probe insert? I've got a 1/2 adapter with the guage. Just want to make sure it doesn't go in too far and interfere with the tranny internals.
Thanks again,
John

It won't go in far enough to interfere with the transmission's internals. The port goes into a passage. It's a long, twisty path to get to any moving parts.
What you do need to be careful about is that the sender can bottom before it tightens in the threads. If you continue to tighten the sender can break off.

Mark,
Thanks for the info. I always find your posts very informative.
I have two adapters. One looks to be about 3/8 and the other 1/2. They both have about 1/2 inch of thread or so. Then the Probe screws into the adapter. Will this hole fill with fluid and that is how the probe reads it? I have the autometer temp manifold as well that you splice into the cooler line. Which will give the most accurate reading? Which would you do if it were you?

The thread is a 1/8 NPT pipe thread.
The port will fill with fluid when the transmission is running.
If I were installing the sender that's where I would put it. I like to know the average transmission temperature, which is what you will see in the port.
If you install the sender in the cooler line you will see great fluctuations in the temperature. When the torque converter unlocks it generates quite a bit of heat. The temperature in the cooler line will go up FAST. As long as the transmission's average temperature stays below about 230F you're fine. Some people like to watch these temperature changes. I don't.

Mark,
If it's 1/8, then it looks like that is about the size of the probe itself. It is threaded as well. I'll crawel under this weekend and check it out, it's usually dark by the time I get home from work.
Have agood one.

My Probe is installed in a port on the passenger side of the tranny right above the pan. Is this suitable? Everyone keeps saying driver side above the pan. I have a 4r70w. It seems to read ok (I think).
