Post Shift Kit

I have the 4R70W auto in my 98 F-150. I am looking for a good shift kit for my truck. But I don't want something that I have to tear my transmision down to install.

Sniper,
I would strongly suggest a Superchip.NO transmission tear down needed.Talk to Mike T. over in the computerchips section.

Cool

Computer modifications and electronic controllers aside, all the "shift kits" will require a valve body removal.

A thing to consider with any pure software shift kit. If the software is telling the transmission to maintain a higher line pressure and the lube circuit is starved for oil, the software still demands line pressure to the shift and...well, you see where this is going. Using a completely mechanical shift kit (valves and springs)does not modify the lube priority and the transmission will shift slower rather than starve the lube circuit. Slow shifting is a lot better than no lube, so you can take it apart and finds the problem before your transmission eats itself. Sort of a built in limp mode.

I think it's only fair that I mention that my above is a generality, and doesn't apply to any paticular shift kit, chip or transmission, and I personally do not and never have worked on the 4R70W, or with any chip. I'm sure that some chips have anticipated the problems I mentioned and I'm not sure that the problem would exist on a 4R70, but I'm not sure it doesn't apply to that transmission, and I don't know that any (or any specific one) chips have a provision to avoid it.

Hey factory tech! Does a 2001 X with a tow package have a different computer program for the transmission shifting than a 2001 X without the tow package?

I just installed a TransGo shift kit. It's $106 including shipping from Summit. It came with an install video. You have to remove the valve body and replace all the springs and valves. I had never done one before. It was real easy! Two hours from drive into the garage and drive out. The shifts are firm but not harsh until about a third trottle. From third throttle up the shifts get real crisp. I liked it so much I bought a second kit for my T-bird.

I'm not the person to ask about programs, except for test stand profiles I don't deal with them. Sorry, you may ask someone who works in an assembly plant.
