I do a good portion of my driving in city traffic and after having to replace the brakes at 21,000 miles, I leave the od switch off around town and my brakes aren't wearing as fast now. so I agree with gah I shouls be able to make the call and not have to get clutchitis doing so in traffic.

1996 e4od

I have a 1996 F150 5.8L 4X4 with the E4OD. I do not have any switch to enable or disable the OD. It only has one position: OD....Is there any way to add a switch to it to prevent it from shifting into OD? I came across this as I was looking online for the lockout mods people were talking about.

Thanks,

Paul

All 1996 F150s with E4OD left the factory with a switch on the end of the shifter handle. If your's doesn't have one you can replace the shifter. There will be a connector in the steering column to plug into the wiring harness.

I was going to say, my '95 XL longbed work truck had a OD button on the shifter, so surely a '96 4x4 would have it? But if not, as said above, a simple shifter swap should clear that right up

Also, I could be wrong here but I seem to remember Chevy touting an OD button on their shifters in '03 like it was the Second Coming...I used to chuckle to myself and think "My plain jane XL had that 8 YEARS ago...what's kept them?"

Wow, it's been over ten years since I posted that, and I'm still driving the same truck. It had just over 100,000 miles on it then, and it's got 204,000 on it now. Knock on wood, the transmission still works fine, and it's still all original; the only things I've replaced are the filter and pan gasket, and the extension housing gasket.

And yes, I'm still using the O/D button.

I do the same thing as you. When around town or going less than 45 I keep it out of OD. Seems better for it rather than having it lug around and keep shifting.

If it would shift into fourth around 50 or so, it wouldn't be a big deal, but it shifts at 42, so if you leave the O/D on around town all the time, it's constantly shifting between third and fourth. Drives me crazy, especially when the TC is locking and unlocking, too. Back when I posted originally, I thought it was an E4OD; actually, it's a 4R70W.

That's true. My 04 shifts into OD around 45mph. If locked out of OD it locks the TQ at 35-37 mph whichs keeps the transmission cooler. I'm still not sure why Factory Tech thinks the OD button is useless unless towing. IMO it keeps the tranny "healthier" when used correctly. A transmission only has "so many shifts built into it"

Matt, the 5 speed autos on the newer trucks shifts into 4th at 42. I use the O/D button everytime I am hooked to a trailer and hardley ever use it if I am not. The only time I do use it if I am not under a trailer is when I have over 2500lbs in the bed. My F350 has 168k on it, has towed it's entire life and it's still going strong even with the Extreme Street tune in it from Innovative combined with my heavy right foot.

The 5R110 in your F-350 is a way different transmission than Matt's 4R75.

Are you sure you have an E4OD? Count the pan bolts.

Or does your shifter display simply have PRND21 instead of (D)?

Ford never installed a 4R70W with the 5.8L in the trucks. They were all E4ODs.

I know, I guess I was not really clear in my post but that was what I was trying to explain. It was one of those days yesterday....

E4OD/C6 Shofter

I discovered someone must have changed the shifter in my truck! This is my first F150 so I didnt know what I was looking for/at. I put some pictures of my dash/shifter here: http://pdmoneyf150.blogspot.com/ and with the help of steve_83 on supermotors I was able to figure out what was going on. Thanks for all the replies. Looks like I will be looking for a shifter or rigging another switch on the dash to go along with the TC lockout mod.

The TCS is simply a momentary switch that connects R/Y to T/W. The TCIL is an LED from R/Y to W/LG, but it's not necessary for the button to work.
