Gears
I have a mustang, but i wanted to buy my brother some gears for his 2001 F-150. I know with mustangs you only need to buy one set of gears to change the ratio. My brothers truck is a 4X4, so do i need to buy two sets of gears for him, or just buy one set? Thanks
mustangjay,
I would have been happy for someone to have bought one of the two sets for me when I had the swap done on mine. But if he's going to do a gear change on a 4X4, he'll need both sets.

Needs one more door.

You may want to find out the total cost of the project also: gears, parts, and labor (in your area). It's nice to know this on a 4X4 beforehand, so your jaw does not hit the floor. Just Kidding, Good Luck !!

Thanks for the help guys
Also i wanted to know how you like your 4.10's? I have 3.73's in my mustang and i love them, but i was thinking in a bigger truck 4.10's would be better.

To get an idea of how that translates from your car to your truck you need to figure out the percentage change of the tire size change, then apply that percentage to your car's axle ratio.
For example, if your car's tire diameter is 27.25 inches -- and your truck's tire diameter is 30 inches -- the ratio of tire size is 30/27.25=1.1 -- so you must multiply your car's 3.73x1.1= 4.10 to keep the same ratio that you're accustomed to with your car.

mustangjay,
Just one word of caution, the gears for the front are reverse cut. The front differential is a flipped 8.8 from the Lincoln. The trucks also use a 31 spline axle.

Those gear changes in 4x4's are expensive. Has anyone done a gear change themselves or is to hard?
I would almost rather pay someone to change the gears is my manual tranny over rear-end gear ratio's.
