TRANSMISSION RELIABILITY
The reports are wrong, the box that goes to lorain is not interchangeable with the box used at KC. Most KC trucks get 4R70s, the 4R100 only goes into F-150s with low emission packages, and Lightnings. There are 30 models of 4R100, and each one is not interchangeable.
The problem with the '01 design was a faulty mechanical diode, which has been fixed. Reverting to the '00 model part was not a serious option because the tooling was scrapped and that wuold have meant a several week delay. The mechanical diode was redesigned and the new parts where in in less than 24 hours, we are running parts ogf the new design allready and they work fine. Lorain and Mighigan Truck lost a day or too of production, that's all. The problem only affected Modular engines, deisels where not a problem.

Hi, Factory_Tech -- Good to read you again.
Say, what improvements were made to the 2000 from the prior years? My Y2K shifts differently than my '97 -- and it's like an electric motor (I like it).

anyone have any information on the reliability probelms which has caused ford to shift back to the 2000 truck transmissions and abandon the mods made on the 2001. the report has them shipping tranys from the ohio truck plant to the kc truck plant ????????
THANKS FACTORY_TECH,, I APPRECIATE THE QUICK RESPONSE. MY F-150 SUPER CREW SEEMS TO SHIFT PERFECTLY, NO SLIPAGE AND PULLS LIKE VELVET AND HAS NOT GIVEN ME A LICK OF TROUBLE..

I still think it's a great transmission, the mechanical diode thing was cointained pretty well. The new ones are fine.
As to upgrades, every year they fiddle with it a little, continuous improvement and all. I think most of the changes are emission and CAFE driven, but some of it gives a better quality transmission and some of it is cost driven, I'm sure.

Greg:
The stall-speed on my Y2K seems to be 1800 and I think I remember the stall-speed on the 97 was 2500 -- same engine, different rear axle and load capy.
Could that be?

Jim,
I'll look it up for you, but to tell you the truth, I've always thought of converters as being just about a step more mysterious than Voodoo. We don't repair them in the plant, so I've never worked on one beyond replacing it, and I know it's a cop out, but I know which color goes in which model....(for the curious, brown in desiels, blue in V-10s and Lightnings, Green in Navigators and Blackstones, yellow in everything else...)
Anyways, Ill look up the stall speeds for the '00 and the 98.
