Auto Trans Temperature
Has anyone charted their transmission temperature while a) Towing, b) city, c) Highway, d) etc.?
How are you taking the measurements?
Do you have any recommendations?

Just did one on mine with the 4R100. Look here.

My recomendation is to put in a tranny temp guage so you can see *your* temperatures.

While I haven't actually written down my temps, I do keep close watch on the gauge when towing, and the one thing that surprises me is that while towing in OD, I run 20-30 degrees cooler than with OD off! I thought I read somewhere that towing in OD builds up more heat - but maybe that only happens when tranny is hunting between 3rd and 4th. Anyway, I now always tow in OD and when the time comes when hunting may happen, just shut off OD and go direct.
Towing (in OD) level/small hills: 165 degrees
Towing (in direct) level/small hills: 190 degrees
outside temp 65 degrees

I think the key is that the torque convertor remains locked. The heat is developed when it unlocks and starts slipping. So, as long as the tranny is staying in gear, locked up and rpms are relatively constant you probably are better off in od. That way the engine is putting less heat into the radiator and hence the radiator mounted tranny cooler.
I think the temp guage is a great idea. Where did you guys get yours?
I just pulled a 3000lb load this weekend and was a little concerned with all I've read about the 4R70W. But when I stopped I popped the hood and was able to hold my hand on the tranny line feeding into the radiator tank. It was quite warm but not painfully so. I'd guess 140 to 150F. How's that for scientific?

In general, the reason for increased temperatures in OD is due to the added friction of going through the planetary gearset of the Overdrive unit.
According to some posts elsewhere on this board, the R70s in use in the current run of 5.4's have improved gearing in the planetary section which prevents them from self-destruction while towing in OD (I personally feel that the electronic mapping merely won't allow enough torque due to it forcing a downshift to third -- which prevents the OD gearing from seeing too much torque).
Now, back on the subject of temperatue. Does anyone know what their tranny temperature is under a variety of conditions?

Tiger, I got my gauge from: http://www.getpower.com
(that's Banks home page) for $29 if I remember correctly
alos got a pod 'C' pillar mount from Autometer for about $15
makes for a more finished factory look (kind of like Dodge diesel gauges)

I got mine from DIS. Paid $29.40 which included shipping for the ISSPRO gauge and sender unit. Heres where I put mine:

Unless you have the 4R100 tranny my info will not help you I don't think. In the 4R100 there is a very convienent pressure test port on the drivers side, just in front of the tranny wiring harness. It has a plug in it. The sender I used is the exact fit for that plug.
I don't think this test port exists in the 4R70W and most people either install a drain plug in the tranny pan and buy the sender that fits that size of the pan plug or they splice into or come straight out of tranny and then reconnect the line right after putting in a T into the outgoing fluid line Then they use whatever reducer fittings they need to put the sender in that "T".
Hopefully someone will step in that has done it in a 4R70W and will know exact sizes of fittings if you need that. Anyone?

After crawling under my truck, there is a port on the drivers side of the 4r70w. After going to a trans shop, they too said that this would be an acceptable place to intall the sending unit, just make sure the sender is tight so that it wont leak. We'll see how this works, i have my sender but my gauge is backorderd!!!

Great! This is good news! All the 4R70W guys are going to want this info. Bad news on the guage cause its now going to be the toughest part of it all
. Where have you decided to put it?
As far as keeping it from leaking, just wrap it very lightly with teflon tape. Very lighlty because it must break through the tape in the treads just enough to ground itself. I used just two wraps and it did ground fine and doesn't leak.

The gauge is going in about the same location as your, the panel is wide enough and there should be enough room behind for the gauge. The install of the gauge should be pretty straight forward. This will be one of the easier ones. My gauge is a intellitronix digital with green numbers (to match the rest of course!)

That will look cool. Make sure there is noting behind there on yours.
BTW: What diameter is that digital guage? My ISSPRPO is 2 inches inside the trim lip. Was wondering, if I ever wanted to change, if it would fill up the same hole or not.

Bought the gauge through summit racing. It was $40 bucks plus another $15 for the sending unit. Its pretty plan jane, just some led numbers and the words 'trans temp' below, however, with the green numbers they will match the rest of the accents in a stock cab. and it measures 2 and 1/16, so I imagine yours would acctually be the same (industry standard size). BTW, dont expect much in the way of cust service from intellitronix, have several emails into them and they have yet to respond!
