4r70w or e4od
I went to the auto parts for a filter kit for my '97 & was asked which trans. The door code is U & the dealer had to change fluid to MERC5 25k ago. Have read a lot of posts but I am still unclear. built 03-17-97

My 97 built 3/96 used regular mercon without incident for 49K miles and was still using it when I traded it a few months ago. Some reported having problms that the switch to Mercon V seemed to fix. All of the 4R70W's seemed to change OEM to Mercon V by 98. Don't know what changed and exactly when or why some had problems and some did not. Go figure?
But the U code is the 4R70W.
E is E4OD or 4R100. They used the E code for both. I guess cause they are so much alike Again, go figure!

Thanks cphilip
I have read so much about 4r70w vs 4r100. When they threw the e4od at me, guess I went blank.

Yes, the thing that always got me was that I was always taught that the E4OD ment "Electronic 4 Speed with OverDrive". This would seem generic and applicable to all the trannies, 4R70W, E4OD and 4R100 alike, wouldn't it since each is exactly that! But NOOOOO, Ford used it to describe one particular tranny model? Hmmmmm...
Actually, for the 100th time, a 4R100 is the new name for the E4OD, yes E4OD meant Electronic 4 Speed Overdrive, and 4R100 means 4 speed, Rear Wheel Drive 1000 Ft/Lbs of Torque, the 4R70 is basically the same as the AOD and AOD-E. Ford changed the name more than the trannies. The biggest difference between a 4R100 and an E4OD is that all the E4ODs had speedo gears, and most 4R100s have OSS extension housings instead, (Output Shaft Sensors) which is a tone wheel speedo system. The differnce between an E4OD and a 4R100 is hjust a step of the evolution, not any more than a typical model year upgrade.
