4R70W or 4R100? What's the difference?
 

Both have an E code on the door pillar of different truck series.

Does a 4R70W B&M Electric Shift Improver Plus work on the 4R100?

I don't really know the difference between the two, but the 4R100 is the required automatic transmission to meet California emissions standards. It must shift differently or at different points so as to reduce emissions.
Maybe that'll help...

I understood the 4R100 was the larger, stronger tranny used in the SuperDutys with V10's and diesels.

Isn't the 4R100 based off the E4OD?? I would look into seeing if one for the E4OD would work. E-mail the guys at bmracing.com

spaceace, about a $1000.00 difference...seriously, the 4R70W is Junk, unless you use your truck as a car, but if you haul or tow, try to get the 4R100, if you can,if your in Ca you don't have this problem.
spaceace, have you ever thought why you should have to spend your own money to fix Fords problem?
Also, you could spend $220 for chip to help that 4R70W??

If the vehicle is a 99 CA F150, its got the 4R100 which is very simular to the E4OD. The E4OD was replaced by the 4R100 in '99. I don't know all of the changes, but one of them had to do with the power take off option for Super Duties.

I'm confused. I have a '99 *California* F-150 5.4 (4X4/3.55LS) and it absolutely, positively has the E4OD. Do some CA F-150s then come with the E4OD and some with the 4R100? And what's the difference? I infer that the 4R100 is newer, but what are the changes?

I DO know they(4R100)are used in the diesel and gas Super Duty trucks.

Checked the build date and it's 1/99. When did they start putting together the '99s? Sept, maybe Aug, of '98?

Still wondering what the difference is betw the E4OD and the 4R100. Why'd they change? *What* did they change? Is the 4R100 tougher? As I consider some mods to add a bit of HP and torque, I'm wondering about long terms effects on the tranny. Anybody know what's the biggest (HP & torgueq) stock engine the E4OD was mated to without problems?

The E4OD was used with the 460 and the 7.3L diesel until 1999.

I have a truck build date of 8/98 (its a 99) and an engine build date of 8/28/98. It has an "E" code for tranny. I believe this is the E40D trans. Apparently they ran these at the beginning of the build. Are they good or bad compared to the newer replacement???

You could have either the E4OD or the 4R100. They are both very simular to each other and look almost the same in appearance. Expy's with the 5.4 come with the 4R100 today and with the E4ODs in the '97-'98 models. Since you have an early '98, you could have either one. Early E4ODs had problems (1989-1992)and a lot of people talk smack on the E4OD, but I think Ford worked the bugs out of them by '93 or '94. My brother in law has a '93 diesel with the E4OD and has never had a problem with the engine or trans for 180,000 miles. You should be OK.

Thanks Tenderpaw. I believe its a E40D since the sticker on the drivers door has an E in it for the tranny. I read elsewhere on here that E=E40D and U=4R70. I'm glad to hear it will probably hold up. I've heard alot of stories about the way peoples trannies shift but mine has always given me a pleasing comfortable ride. I hope it stays that way.

fordyfour, just to clarify things there is no price difference between the 4R100 and 4R70. You just can't get the 4R100 unless you have a Calif. 5.4L. (or maybe the 7700# opt) The 4R70 was beefed up in 1999 to handle the 5.4L. The 4R100's are used in the super duty's, but the diesel engine seems to have no problem tearing them to shreds if you read the posts at ford-diesel.
