Underbody rust on new F150...
Hi, all:
Is it normal for a new F150 with less than 120 miles on it to show orange rust-looking somethingorother on the drive shaft and wheel hubs, when I look under the body? Thanks, pjd |
Unfortunately, yes. As time passes and you get a few more hundred miles, things will get even uglier underneath.
I don't know of a new vehicle that this does not happen with. ------------------ 1999 F-150 XLT Supercab Black factory steps Flareside Sport Package Oxford White Full tint Bug Shield CD player 17" wheels, K&N Ford Soft Tonneau Cover Gibson Super Truck "Did it myself" Undercoating Herculiner "Freak on a Leash" If you've ever purchased online, please visit my new site and post your experience: Online purchasing experiences good and bad. |
Thanks!
I called the dealer in a panic (this is my first new vehicle, and I had no idea what to expect), and he explained that the rust was surface rust on cast-iron parts in the F-150. Now I can't shake the mental image of my truck as a skillet. https://www.f150online.com/f150board/wink.gif pjd ------------------ ---- 2000 F-150 XLT Supercab 4x4 Sport package Black factory steps Chestnut Brown CD with 6-disc changer Cloth captain's chairs 17" wheels LT265/70R17's Towing package Extang tonneau cover Ford liner |
Hi their! My 97 is black underneath https://www.f150online.com/f150board/smile.gif I saw the rust and painted it with black rust paint.

When my 99 was new I did my own undercoating. Even thought I did a pretty good job. Now I can see all the splotches I missed. I don't think it really hurts anything, (other than my pride).

I noticed the same thing on my previous 98 F-150 and the new Y2K F-150. The rear differential cover on my 98 started to rust and peel..all in less than a year. I scraped it off, primed and repainted it with flat black...it looked great. So far, the new 2000 is holding up much better. I was very concerned that my new factory ordered 2000 had some surface rust underneath only 3 weeks after it was built (the day I picked it up)...but this seems to be quite normal.
