Will a '97 E4OD bold in place of a '89 E4OD?
 

My dad has an '89 F250 with the 460 and E4OD trans. 1989 was the first year for this trans and there were a lot of problems with it in the early years. My dad's E4OD has already be rebuilt once back when the truck was under warranty. It is now reaching the stage for another rebuilt. He would rather replace the '89 trans with one from a newer vehicle because supposedly most of the problems in the earlier trans were fixed in the later models. He found one from a '97 F250 w/ the 460 V8 with only 20k miles. Anyone know a reason why it wouldn't work?

I've pondered the thought of replacing my AOd in my 89 with a E40d. I doubt there would be any problems at all. As long as the Tranny Does have the Big Block bolt pattern.

Pastmaster, I can help you with that one. To do it, you will need to obtain an external transmission controller since the E4OD is controlled by the engine computer. Your computer isn't set up to do that since your truck came with an AOD. You might be better off getting a beefed up AOD.

The question is whether or not Ford changed the pin-outs on the connectors from '89 to '97. If they did you'll have to adapt the wiring harness. The experts on that are Baumann Engineering, who also make stand alone controllers, etc.

I agree... I haven't had any problems with my AOD, yet (knock on wood)...Shifts fine with 145k.

I was thinking about the wiring myself. I know Ford had problems with a sensor on the Tranny. I think that the sensor was replaced, so the wiring probably is different.
