Talking Mercon V

Just added a trany cooler that Santa left for me and noticed that on my dipstick it says to use Mercon V that is a synthetic trans fluid. Just wondering if in fact synthetics are used for 99’ and newer?

The cooler seems to have really helped the shift firmness even with the Superchip installed.

BigRed,

Yes, Mercon 4 is synthetic as is your differential gear lube. Your owner's manual explains these fluids and not to mix them with non-synthetic lubricants.

Mercon v is not 100% synthetic. I'm not exactly sure, but I know that Amsoil is not compatible with it yet. They will be in the near future. Amsoil is 100% synthetic, and is compatible with Mercon, but not MerconV.

I would not but anthing other than Mercon V or compatible in my transmission, if that is what is required.

Cool

I was told, by the local tranny shop that Ford put Mercon V in some of the tranny's because it ran cooler which helped the life of the 4R70W electronics. Also I was told the stuff is pretty pricy. It should say on your dip stick if V is required as previously stated. I just posted a question on the red sticker found on my tranny today: Prior To Repair see TSB-97-17. Anyone know anything about this?

Mercon V (Dexron III) is a semi-synthetic blend used in the later transmissions. My '95 4R70W used it. It is more resistant to breakdown and Quaker State sells it now in many stores.

I called Amsoil Tech department and the guy said that Mercon V has different friction characteristis than other ATF that is why it is not compatible.

Cool

I talked to my Ford Service Rep last night and asked about the Tranny Fluid change/compatability(Mercon/Mercon V/ Amsoil). He said that they use Ford Mercon or Mercon V fluid whichever the book calls for on the particular tranny. Amsoil is not currently compatable with Mercin V but, they are working on it. The type of changer my dealer uses is the Wynn's system where they intercept the return line from the cooler/radiator(14-17 quarts old stuff out=14-17 quarts new stuff in). $94.95 complete at Riverview Ford in Columbia, Illinois.
