Maintenance

I have a 99 F150 w/ the 5.4L, Automatic and 3.55LS rear end. I looked and looked at the maintenance book and can't find an fluid change interval for the E4OD transmission. Any suggestions? I've heard of lifetime transmission fluids on some new GM cars but not on trucks.

I have always heard to change it between 30,000 and 35,000 miles. I personally think the lifetime fluid stuff is bull.

I've been told by fellow RVer's and the dealership to change the transmission fluid at 20,000 miles if you tow.

I went through that maintenance schedule from front to back and found a fluid change interval if you tow or if you have one of 4 transmissions but not the E4OD(30k), I tow a ski boat maybe 3 or 4 times a year and my truck isn't an ambulance. Changing it often can't hurt and the service department will give me a different answer every time I ask so I guess it's every 30k. Thanks for the input.

The reason you can't find any info about the E4OD in your 1999 F-150 is that you do not have an E4OD. You either have the 4R70W (most common)or the 4R100 (California Emissions only). Check the transmission code on the sticker on the driver's side door jamb. If it is "U" then you have a 4R70W. If it is "E" then you have the 4R100.
I hope this helps.

Wow this is wierd. To day at work I was thinking about Indyfans statement that the trans change interval wasent in the maintenence or service manual that comes with your truck. So I looked at mine and there it was. So I looked at other owners manuals and I found it there too. In the severe use it was at 21,000 miles "change automatic transmission fluid" and again at 42,000 miles. It could be that you possibily have the wong book? or the 99 model year book is different.?? The 4R100 is the E40D with some up dates. Otherwise its the heavier trannie>>>>>>>

OK guys, my 1999 Ford Scheduled Maintenance Guide states: perform AT services on all vehicles equipped with 4R70W and 4R100W transmissions at 30,000 mile intervals @ Normal schedule. Toward the back of the booklet in the Special Operating Conditions section, it states 30,000 miles regardless of normal or special conditions. So it looks like 30,000 miles is correct.

V10man. My book states the same thing, along with 2 other trannies that start with AX I think, but no mention of the E4OD.
Mlaugh. I'm beginning to think that same thing about the manual, it also says that my radio should stay on after I turn off the key and it doesn't. As far as the transmission code on the door sticker, under the "T" column (which is the only thing that seemed to indicate transmission) it had an "E". When I ordered it I explicity asked for the E4OD and was told that was the "only" automatic available in California, the invoice reflects this also.

My manual calls for the fliud to be changed at 60k. I've got the E40D trans with 55k on it now. Fluid looks and smells ok though.

While were on this subject. I was told of a way to change to transmission fluid by going to one of those quick lubes that us a machine that recirculates the old fluid out and the new in. I'm being told that changing the transmission fluid this way is better. They say that if I change the fluid and filter that only 30% of the old fluid is replaced. Using this special (?) machine replaces all of the fluid. Does anybody know anything about this and what is the best fluid to use.

Thanks Ahead

I, too, have been frustrated with the inability of changing a majority of the transmission fluid by dropping the pan. I understand the dealerships and some lube places disconnect the fluid lines going to the heat exchanger in the bottom of the radiator and flush through there. Just got to thinking, couldn't you just disconnect the line going to the radiator, have assistant briefly start the engine, and direct the fluid into a bucket, then measure what came out and replace it with clean fluid? Seems like that would work at far less than the 85 to 120 bucks that I see advertised. Obviously you wouldn't want to run the engine for very long with no fluid in the tranny. What do y'all think?
