Which Tranny?

I was wondering how I can tell which transmission I have, and more about it. I think I have a 4R70W, but I would also like to know more specifics. I have an '00 5.4L 4x4 ORP with Tow Package. Thanks for the help.

the easiest way to determine which tranny you have is to open the driver's door and look at the sticker on the B pillar. if the trans code is U you have the 4r70w...if it's E then you have the 4r100. i can't really tell you much about those two trannies other than the 4r100 is considered the heavy duty tranny and i believe also has more electronic control built into it vs the 4r70w...

The 4R70W is rated for 700 lb-ft of torque AFTER the torque converter multiplies engine torque 2:1. The 4R100 is rated for 1000 lb-ft, also after the 2:1 torque converter multiplication.

Both have similar, though different, electronic controls. Neither is more electronic than the other.

If the 4R100 is supposedly handles more torque why do they put them with the 5.4 motor?

I don't understand your question.

Both the 4R70W and the 4R100 have enough torque capacity for the 5.4L engine.
