transfer case fluid?

I'm a little bit past 60K and the Ford book says my transfer case fluid needs to be changed. I looked under the truck and it looks fairly simple, drain/fill. Easy stuff.

Anyone done this before? Any "gotchas" or special tools a la' the stupid fuel filter tool? How much fluid? Any upgraded fluid ideas?

Thanks,
Jay

Done it a couple of times

Nothing "special" to it other than it can be difficult to re-fill. There's not a lot of room to get a bottle tipped up enough to pour the fluid so, if you have a small pump, it'd make the job easier.

As for the fluid- I like Mobil 1 ATF. The transfer case only takes 2 quarts (roughly) so it's not that expensive to use high-quality fluids.

Thanks for the info. I use Mobil 1 Synthetic ATF in the tranny as well, so that will be an easy one.

Thanks,
Jay

:TIP:

To find a small pump, powered or hand, try a boat dealership or marine supply type store. Most all boats have to have ther oil pumped out through the dipstick so there are tons of pumps in all price ranges. Even try Bass Pro Shops, they carry one.
