what model tranny do i have?

Hey fellas,

Just bought this truck about 4 months ago, love it so far except for the lincoln-ish shifts the tranny provides, tell me what model I have so I can research a shift kit for it, or any suggestions on a shift kit would be appreciated, specificly, most shift kits have 3 setting something like "race" "street/strip" and "tow" which setting on which kit worked best for you. I do alot of light to light driving so "race" is out of the question. also, I do like where the shift pionts are now, did the kit you installed change your shift points or just the firmness of them without altering the prm point? thanks for the help

More will chime in with where to look for the code, but more about what truck you have would help. From your name, I gather it's a 1998 Lariat 4x4. Yes, I know I very perceptive!! :D

If you have a 4.6, you have the 4R70W. If it's 5.4, most likely it's still a 4R70W unless it came from CA then it may be a 4R100.

A '98 may have a 4R100 regardless of what emmissions package you have, can't remember what year they changed most 5.4s to the 4R70W. If you have an E code on your door under transmission it's a 4R100, U code is 4R70w. If you have the 4R100 may I humbley suggest the Factory Tech shift kit, (I designed this one, so I'm not exactly dis-interested). Availible at www.powersurgeperformance.net
Like I said, it's my kit, but if you do a search (check the Lightning Forum) I think you'll find the people who use it think highly of it, and if I do say so myself, my customer support is the best.

Thanks,

G

Factor_Tech,

I have an "e" on the door for the tranny code, I went to the site u hyperlinked but I didnt see a shift kit for a 4r100. I did see an entire valve body for a lightning is that what you are talking about?

I also have a e code 98 and I was wondering is one tranny better than the other?

I thought that it wasn't until 1999 when they put the 4R100's in. I thought that before that it was the E40D, the predecessor to the 4R100?

Anywho, the 4R100 handles a bigger torque load than the 4R70W. It's built a little stronger to handle the extra torque of the 5.4L

E4OD and 4R100 are basically the same box, they changed the name when they cahnged model years a few years back. The shift kit I linked to is the complete valve body.
The 4R100/E4OD is the stronger of the two trannies (4R70W/AOD)

facrory_tech,

since u designed this thing i'm just gonna ask u about it. what "shortcommings" does this valve body correct? lack of fluid flow, pressure, etc... i assume. does it raise the rpm at which the shifts occur or just the firmness of them? I just want to firm em up, i like where they happen. had any problems with these? why should i purchase the whole valve body vice just a shift kit? thanks Mike
