2004 F150 Heritage 4r70w

The transmission went out in my heritage, was wondering if the trans out of a 98 3.8l mustang will work. I know the bellhousing bolt pattern is the same, but what would have to be changed if anything? Also, what transmissions would I be able to just put in with no changing of parts?

What engine is in your Heritage?

In 2004 the output speed sensor system changed. The 2004 and newer transmissions have many more pulses per revolution than the older ones did. An older transmission will not work properly in a 2004 or newer truck.

Mark - does this also apply to the Heritage, which is essentially a leftover 2003?

Good question! I don't know.

Still need to know what engine he has. If it's a 4.2 it might work, but weren't there some significant electronic differences between 1998 and 2003? Is the tailshaft the same between the Mustang and F150?

*IF* the Heritage used a 2003 transmission, I *think* a 1999-2003 F150 4R70W transmission with the same engine (V6/V8) and drive system (2wd/4wd) is pretty much plug and play.

The 04 Heritage used the old style ring gear, so the pulse count for the OSS is the same. Electronically they are the same. As long as the truck has a 4.2l and is not a 4x4 then the Mustang 3.8l transmission would be physically the same. Internally there are some differences. Mainly that the 3.8l transmission has 1 less clutch pack in the direct and a weaker ring gear.

The short answer is that it will bolt straight up and work. It's just not nearly as strong.
