Help! Changed broken snap ring and STILL slipping to neutral
My '04 F150 was slipping into neutral after the 3rd gear and so i watched a few videos of people changing the snap ring. I followed all the steps and found a very broken snap ring, retrieved all the pieces. The piston/servo also came out because of how broken the snap ring was. Only about 1/4-1/3 of the ring was still intact the rest was all in tiny pieces. I found that the piston was a little bent so i got a new piston & rod from the dealer and put a new one in. I used a jack to get the piston in and it looked like it sat in there just fine. I also changed the transmission filter and added more fluid. I took it for a test drive and NOTHING changed. I'm at a loss, spent all day on it and everything seemed to go well, any idea what's going on? any help appreciated, i'm so frustrated.
I read about some band that sits around the servo, could it be that i put it in wrong? How would i fix that? It's shifting just fine, but the original problem is still there.

Thanks the pics and explanation are really helpful. i did remove the separator plate and found one small piece, i pretty much put together all the pieces of the band from what i could tell...when i open up again i'll check that area that you circled to be sure there's no more.
I think I'm going to play it safe and order the 4l60e detent roller since i've never done this before...i just have to figure out why some of them on ebay have a bolt and others don't. I'm planning to open up in a week and a half, hopefully properly placing the servo will take care of it.

Iv'e always used 2 flat blade screwdrivers. One in the servo pin hole to catch the band and push it all the way then the second in the square hole to hold the band in place. Remove first one from servo pin hole and insert OD servo.
Granted, this takes coordination and both hands. But, for me, it works 100% of the time and it's totally free.
I can see how something to hold it to have your hands free could be beneficial though for sure if this isn't something you do every day.
