Swapping a 4R70W for a 4R100
Has anyone put a 4R100 in a truck that originally had the 4R70W? I hear it's a direct bolt in and plug n play but don't want to shell out the cash on rumors and speculation. My current 4R70W finally gave up after 250,000+ miles and a plenty of over loaded towing. I would love a super duty but it's not in the budget right now. Was just wondering if the 4R100 is worth the upgrade.

Beefed Up 4R70???
> I know for a fact that you can get a heck of a beefed up 4R70W that would cost less and be a much better option than that swap.

You and GLC both say a beefed up 70 is a possibility. You and others point out the wisdom of not doing a 100 swap. Ok.
1) How where-what-do I ____ to get/create/rebuil-myself?... a "beefed up" 70 out of/to replace mine or some rebuilder?
2) What constitutes "beefed up?" Sounds like the way fo go for my new-to-me (2 yrs,) 2001 5.4 4x4 @ 260k...?
TIA SO much for ALL these wisdoms. Old semi-broke vet but ok wrench sure appreciates options. Dealer i$n't one of them. 😏

^^^^^^ yup yup yup....He's on and off the site but is more than helpful in helping YOU get it done!!! FWIW...it is actually a pretty easy tranny to work with...other than being HEAVY....jeez I thought a th400 was heavy till i took mine out. 122,000 miles ago
Only thing i can recommend is because the steels are "select thickness" do NOT buy new ones until you check YOURS. I ended up haveing to buy another set of steels to get my clearance correct (IIRC...needed the .067's ...kit had .062) that added another $85

Built-up 4r70w
Darrin of BCT Transmissions was SO easy to discuss this with. I ordered from him. Detroit was Motor City. Indiana must be where they got transmissions. Even with S&H to Calif I got a good price for a normal trans - while yet also getting one BUILT-UP.
Some main inclusions in the selection were more plates, (some machining required,) an Optional rebuilt convertor w better stall point, shift mod up a notch, and I'm getting an Optional pan with a drain on it. 😊
For me, no core. Local? Maybe he'd like one. Dunno. He has kits too. Google him. BCA Transmissions. Then call. He does email, but this is a hard topic for email sometimes. (No kickbacks disclaimer.)
I like quality and will buy a socket w no warrantee at 3x the price of one with "free lifetime replacement - abuse is ok." Those sockets can break on a tranny job and IF you Only bloody a knuckle, you're lucky. I didn't even ask Darrin about a warantee. Try him. Sr Members here like him, too. 1000 HP? He can do, too. I just have 260 stock.
Thanks everyone!!! & Darrin!
