My over drive band is done. Can I safely tow my camper trailer in 3rd since I never use the over drive to tow the trailer anyway?

 

I would be concerned about just driving the truck, much less towing with it, if you have a transmission with any issues. It's only a matter of time before more things start breaking.

 

Yes, you should have no problems if the worn overdrive band is the only problem.

 

are you sure its the band? might be a broken snap ring and the debris is blocking the OD servo regulator valve in the valve body.

Actually, you should be towing your camper in 3rd most all of the time anyway. That may be what happened to your band.

I tow a heavy camper with my 01. The transmission is ironically the original that come in the truck almost completely stock except for the valve body. The pump has never been removed from it, so all the internals are the way Ford sent it. The only time I let it go into overdrive is when I'm on totally flat ground and not pulling to either pass another vehicle or climb a hill.
