2001 F-150 5.4 about to tackle transmission rebuild

Good morning, new to this forum, I have a 2001 Lariat Super Cab with 5.4 and around 148k miles on it. I had a "shift solenoid A" failure "ERROR P0750 and the blinking OD light.
With the help of a good friend we have dropped the 4R70W and are ready to rebuild it.
I have found some pretty complete rebuild kits on EBay for about $193 but I am concerned about the quality of the friction disks. I will be replacing all the solenoids while I have it apart. can anybody post some links to a "better" rebuild kit. ? occasional towing of a pair of jetskis. I am looking for longevity and reliability. This is what I am looking at so far in my Ebay Cart.

Rebuild kit here >http://www.ebay.com/itm/371132258124

Solenoids here >http://www.ebay.com/itm/322007522477

New Torque Converter here> http://www.ebay.com/itm/252683556064

Bearing Kit Here > http://www.ebay.com/itm/222326715128

Sonnax Sure Cure Kit Here >http://www.ebay.com/itm/112236989055

Thanks for feedback!!!

Ok...

I wouldn't use that kit. Bad luck with frictions from that company. The other concern is that the steels might leave clearance issues.

Solenoids: Ok

Torque converter: Never heard of them so ?

Sure cure kit: NO!!!

Look around. Better options might be a lot closer than you think. There might be a site that doesn't yet have it all listed, but can get you anything you need

Regarding the sure cure....

I am curious, what is the issue with the sure cure kit?
How do you like this clutch pack instead?

As I suggested - contact Darrin directly.

On that cure kit you can ask at least one on this forum who had to replace his valve body because of it. Worse yet is when the transmission has to be rebuilt after installation. I've seen many of those.

And that red friction kit is a very bad idea for this transmission. The factory chose to use high energy material in the shifting clutches to account for controlled slippage on the shifts. IF you used all red paper you would need to NOT use a fluid like Mercon V or any synthetic and deal with the very likely issues in shift quality and the almost certainty of torque converter clutch shudder.

Update, My sun gear has a few missing teeth, the drive shell teeth have some damge, the sun gear itself can not be removed from the Planetary Set, a few planetaries have chunks missing from the gears, and the Planetary Set is stuck to the Direct Drum (could be bushing melt) . also one bearing has some chunks missing revealing small rollers, I believe it is the direct sun bearing.
Oh! and of course when the pan was pulled there were quite a bit of metal shards that looks like bearing remains and a few teeth in there too.

Did the stub shaft come out of the direct drum?

Ok, a lot of times that particular failure is from the stub and input on the direct drum twisting and cutting off the lube flow to the rear of the planet.

So that's a lot of scrap metal then. I hate when I find that.

You can see the teeth damaged on the drive shell and the broken bearing on the bottom of this pile. The fused planetary unit is in my other truck.

Also curious if you got your parts? You never replied back to get discount pricing.

Hard to tell what failed there first. But I would consider getting a planet set out of a newer transmission. There is a guy from Illinois on ebay selling the 04+ set for like $180 shipped I think. That's a good deal. If you do that you will need to use the newer bearing that goes between the sun gear and sun shell or the stack will be off.

The newer planet set has the hardened pinions like yours has, but it also has a welded on steel back plate and comes with hardened sun gears. Also, the non-magnetic sun shell is stronger than the magnetic one. i exclusively use those on my stupid horsepower builds.

But if the bearing came apart and caused that then it doesn't matter what the teeth are made of. They are going to chip off.

If you press that direct drum off of that sun gear you're going to find metal in the lube hole of the sun gear causing them to stick together.

I found a pretty decent rebuild kit without the red disks, thank you!
so this drive hub from the 4R75W will go right in? or i need the planetary and larger bearing too?
