RTV Dry time - or use gasket
How long to really wait for RTV gasket maker to dry, before adding AT fluid?
Last time I changed tranny fluid, I'm sure I used RTV gasket maker silicone for the pan (don't remember a gasket). I noticed the new filter includes a rubber gasket. Maybe should just use that? Now, reading the package of Permatex Blue RTV, it says * put the pan on while sealant's still wet * finger tighten the bolts till sealant begins squeezing out * let dry ~ 1 hr - then torque to specs * allow drying 24 hours before filling w/ fluids or returning to service. 1) No shop or dealer waits 24 - or 3 - hours - if they use RTV at all. 2) Last time, I'm sure I wouldn't have waited 24 hours, but don't remember the exact time. Thanks. |
Unless it's damaged, reuse the factory gasket. It's better than anything aftermarket.

Thanks glc.
The new gasket w/ tranny filter seems well made - "neoprene-like." For future reference, does anyone really wait 24 hrs after using RTV (tranny pans, differential cases, etc.) before putting fluid back in? |
No, because I also use a gasket. I only use enough RTV to keep the gasket in place when reinstalling the pan or cover.
I know it goes against what we were all taught - never reuse a gasket - but in the case of Ford tranny pans just clean up the surfaces and reuse the original gasket as long as it's not damaged. |
The Ford Factory transmission pan gasket is rubber bonded and is re-useable. DO NOT use the crappy gasket that came with the filter kit !!!!
If you need a replacement rubber bonded gasket, assuming you have a 4R70W, order it form here; http://www.transmissionpartsusa.com/...-0027141hd.htm |
