Bump with shifting from 1st to 2nd

Hey everybody, Ive got an 04 F150 5.4 bought used from the dealership and noticed it bumps 90% of the time when shifting from 1st to 2nd. But all other shifts are smooth. Ive tried looking and asking around and ive so far been told that the bump or hard shifting is a sign of the transmission filter beginning to clog up? Went and bought the filter kit and all that good stuff along with some lucas additive to help with the hard shifting.

Anybody else have this issue and if so did it help? Truck has 122,000 miles on it.

If the transmission filter is clogging up the transmission is toast. The only way a transmission filter can clog up is when one or more clutches or bands fail. Once they fail and clog the filter a new filter and lucas additive are just a waste of money.

Most likely you have a 1-2 accumulator piston that is either sticky or has a broken spring.

how would I check the accumulator piston/spring? Am I able to see it when I drop the pan and change the filter or does it require dropping the transmission?

Here's a thread that explains that, plus a lot more. http://www.crownvic.net/ubbthreads/u...Number=1460017

yep, classic symptoms of a broken 1-2 lower spring.

you can pull the 1-2 accumulator once the pan is off with out having to pull the valve body.

I would replace the 1-2 piston while you have it apart.

its also possible one of the check b@lls is deteriorating and not completely round any more.

I have seen this on 2 transmissions recently.

I need parts numbers if possible! Trying to order these over the phone and the ford guy wants parts numbers. From what ive been told I have a 4r75E tranny

part # for what? have you taken it apart yet and inspected for damage/broken parts?

If your contact at the dealership parts department can't find a common 1-2 spring, you need to find a different dealer to call.

Got the parts, just waiting for the guy thats doing the work to call and let me know what he finds.

Got it back from the shop. Bottom spring was broke in half sitting crooked up inside the piston. Upper spring was just the outer spring so replaced upper spring, piston and lower spring. Truck shifts super smooth now!

Mine does this sometimes also. Can someone do a quick writeup? Is it as easy as pulling a snap ring, piston and replacing the spring?

FI10Fires 04-22-2014 06:40 PM

I believe you just remove the snap ring and it all drops out. Thats how the guy explained it to me, not so hard getting it out as it is getting it back in.
