Transmission Problems

Ok i had my father just buy me a 2004 fx4 with around 194k miles and the truck has been well taken care of and the truck has a whine to it some what like a supercharger and the transmission doesn't shift were it should and its some what sluggish. but the guy said it should be good for awhile but it feels like i got to put my foot more in it to get it going and i dont gun it every were i take it easy. i know a good amount of things about my truck but i dont have the tools of course to see what is wrong and i dont want to just hoop the gun and rebuild the tranny so what do yall recommend??

Was there service records for a transmission service/flush when the vehicle was purchased?

How's the fluid look, smell, is it low?

When in doubt drop the pan, clean it with brake clean and make sure the plastic bobber is gone from when the truck was built, rubber gasket is re-usable, change filter. Add 4-5.5 quarts.

A flush of the system (could make it worse)with the trans line hooked up to hose and drian in bucket, stop once the fluid stops measure and add what was taken out. In the end it should 14 quarts
