4r75e tranny rebuild?
 

Hi All,

I have a 2006 f150 lariat with the 5.4l.

My wife came home and said the truck was acting funny. It was revving and not switching gears. i checked the codes ....nothing.

i took it for a ride and right away noticed the gears didnt engage, almost like a slipping clutch. After about 3 blocks the dash lit up with "transmission malfunction" and the cel started flashing. I parked and took it to the dealership the next day.

They told me the error codes were P0731 incorrect gear ratio 1st gear, also found gear ratio is at 1:1 for 1st, 2nd and 3rd gear. they said my transmission will need to be rebuilt/replaced.

I am going to rebuild it myself. I do all of my own mechanical work, unless it is under warranty, so i am confident that with a manual i will be fine.

Can anyone recommend what I will need? I will have to rent a shop for the weekend to do the work so would like to have all of my ducks in a row to be sure i can finish in one weekend.

Also, i live in Canada so would like to order from somewhere in the US as it is generally cheaper. Any suggestions where to order from?

Tools that are required to do the rebuild correctly;

1) snap ring pliers

2) clutch spring compressor

3) lip seal protectors -

4) torque wrench - Inch pound and foot pound

5) slide hammer and adapters to pull the front pump off

6) Micrometer

7) measuring bar that goes at the top of the transmission to check overall end play and intermediate clutch end clearance -

An optional tools is the servo compressor tool, some people make this tool themselves. I assembled transmissions for years without it, but using this tool makes things much easier.

Good repair manuals are also essential, I own both ATSG manuals, but I find the detail and pictures in the Ford factory repair manual to be better.

today i read the problem that You Had Kong time ago. i want to ask if you could repair your truck by yourself.
While i was , i could feel identify with The failure of your truck, so in my case, one month ago while i was driving my truck reaching The End of a slope the transmisión started with the Message “trasnsmission mulfunction” and the couldn’t run more.
He first thing that i did, was check the información on it computer. The first message were P0720 and P0722 (failure oss and iss). Due this, i replaced both sensors, but tested the truck again and repeat the same faliure, but now the scanner didn’t detect a new Dtc (only detected P1000).

So with your experience, What was the failure on the transmission ? Band, converter, solenoids, pump, sensor, pcm?

so like you i want to fix myself the transmission, did you repair for yourself ? It was difficult? How Many dollars spent to repair it?

it has been a long time since dealing with this issue. I rebuilt the transmission myself. It is not difficult, all you need is a clean area and maybe some patience.

My trans had failed due to the input clutch housing "tearing" around the crimp for the retaining ring. i have attached a link for a youtube video that shows exactly what my problem was.

I apologize for bringing up an older thread but this might be the exact one I need to post on. I have a 06 f150 as well (not a lariat sadly tho :( ) and I just went through a very similar process on finding out my transmission needs to be replaced or needs a complete rebuild. My problem is I am not technically as mechanical per say. My shop quoted 3700 for a rebuild but that seems awfully expensive for a rebuild. I read this article https://transmissioninfo.wixsite.com...sioninfo/4r75e on rebuilt versus remanufactured 4r75e and I never knew there was a difference? Can someone tell me if that info is accurate?

Darrin Burch is a forum member and he builds quality transmissions.

That article made my head hurt with it's inaccuracies. A more powerful ring gear? Give me a break. Ring gears are not powerful. The author shows a complete lack of understanding of how a transmission works. And it says that the 4R75 is a lighter duty alternative to the 4R70. The 4R75 is a heavier duty trans, not lighter.

But back to the difference between remanufactured and rebuilt: It's mostly spelling. That's the big difference. Quite often the process for remanufacturing is partially automated, where rebuilding is almost always done by hand.
