4R70W Transmission
Hello all, I have a 2001 F150 4.6 4x2 with the 4R70W transmission. Well the transmission has decided to stop working in 3rd and 4th gears....it is still driveable through town just not out on the highway as for it will just kick out of gear. My uncle who is a mechanic on the side and drove the truck and says the clutches are out and would be better to either buy a used transmission or a rebuilt one. I was wondering if anyone knows what years and models will interchange with this pickup. I want my truck back up and running, I don't like just looking at it and this are becoming hard to find or can't find anything out of another pickup. Thanks

94 to 97 are the same, 98-00 and 01-03 are when the changes were made for direct interchange.
Your specific truck can use any 4.6 based 4r70 trans. you can get from crown vics, mustangs, trucks, vans etc from 01-03. There are 2 exceptions though that you must know about. You CANNOT get one from a lincoln town car or a crown vic police interceptor. They have a longer tail shaft and you would be required to shorten your driveshaft.

Apparently it's still relevant to Mike. Since he searched for the thread, read it, and decided to comment.
Mike thinks it's fine to turn off the overdrive, do no further diagnostics or attempt to correct the issue, and just keep driving and towing without overdrive. He has been doing that for 5 years. And if Mike is having the same problem as Sandy, he can't drive on the freeway either. Hard to imagine 5 years of driving without going on the freeway.
For anyone else who has searched, and found this thread, and having the same problem.....I would recommend that you take more action than turning off OD and not driving on the freeway for 5 years.
If you have a local transmission shop, and the techs are really good with your specific transmission, then a rebuild may be a good option. My preference is for a remanufactured transmission.
