Please help!

08 f150 4.2L 5spd 64k miles. This last winter a few times when i would start moving, the clutch pedal catches almost right when it leaves the floor. Usually it starts catching at about an inch off the floor ad then about an inch from fully released, it is fully engaged. The few times it messed up, it was very cold outside. It would catch right when it is starting to move, and would be fully engaged at not even half way released. Well today I started my truck and backed up with no problem, turned around and moved forward with no problem and stopped to open a gate. When I got back in my clutch pedall was messing up like I described. except this is the first time it has done it when it was hot outside. Now it wont stop doing it. When it was cold, I would just stop, let the clutch out while in neutral and push the clutch back in. While the clutch is depressed, I would move the shifter from 1st to reverse and back a few times and then the clutch pedal was acting fine. Right now it is messing up and I figured I would try to drive a little bit to maybe jar it loose. putting the shifter into the gears is a little rougher than usual, 5th gear was a lot harder to get in. I pulled over and tried my method and it wouldnt let me into any gear at all. I shut off the truck, started it back up and it would let me go into the gears again but the clutch pedal was still messing up. I have never flushed or changed any fluid except motor oil, could this be a fluid level issue? right now it is too hot under the truck to check the tranny fluid so I have to wait for awhile. Thank you.. Also the clutch seems to be engaging without slippage and it still feels like it is catching great, just when the pedal is not in the right area. and any help is appreciated. Also I have never had a clutch go out on my or a throwout bearing mess up. Never had any issues with any standards I have had so I dont know what it feels like.

its either the clutch master cylinder or the hydraulic slave cylinder....I'm banking on the clutch master cylinder, since you didn't indicate any leaks or fluid loss....

slave cylinder leakage.... the bottom of the bell housing will be wet...

clutch master cylinder leakage....the fire wall inside the cab will be wet

the plunger in the clutch master cylinder can hang up due to old fluid but at the same time become inoperable....its just better to replace it..

Well the firewall isn't wet I am pretty sure....but there is an area right up by the bell housing that looks like it leaked something but I figured it was motor oil because it was low one time on my last oil change and the oil was all over....I didn't tighten the drain plug well enough so it was a slow leak. But what process needs done to replace a slave cylinder and what does it all involve? Does the tranny have to come off? Sorry this is just really bad timing for something to happen like this. Thanks.

The slave is concentric with the throwout bearing, so the tranny has to come out.

Funny thing - 64k and 4 years old is exactly when my slave blew.

That's weird....maybe that's why Ford's warrantee is done at 60k....lol. also I was quoted at about $450....does that sound like a good price?

That's not a bad price for a slave replacement with labor. However, what I did was have a complete clutch job done, figuring that the tranny R&R was the bulk of the labor and in the long run I'd actually be saving a bit.

What I'd do is get a second opinion from a competent tech - it MIGHT just need a good bleeding.

Ok I took it to the place that quoted 450, they said it was seeping fluid still and said to replace it would be around $375

Better get it fixed. Mine lasted about 2 weeks after the pedal started feeling funny, then it completely blew.

Ok got it fixed. I don't know if anyone remembers but I had posted before about my 4th gear doing a quick grind while shifting from 3rd to 4th at above 4000rpms, now I got it back and all of a sudden it is at like 2800 rpms and up. Normally I would get on it, like to pass, and when I go to shift into 4th I have to just hold the clutch in until the rpms go below 4000 before I put the shifted into 4th or it would grind. Now it does it under normal acceleration and shifting. It's like if I'm going 45mph or over in 3rd when it does it now. Any ideas?

Ok after sitting all day, the grinding issue has fixed itself kinda....it is back to above 4000 rpms again...also I forgot to mention, the mechanic said my tranny fluid was looking dark. So that got replaced too.

Did he replace the pilot bearing?

This is one reason why I prefer to do the whole clutch when I'm paying for a tranny R&R.
