Transfer Case Shutter, I think

So my truck has started this weird noise. When I'm driving, at about 1900-2100 rpm range, foot on the gas, I can hear this "shutter" or "small gravel in a can rattle". But I don't think it's cam stuff, the reason why: When I put it in four wheel drive, it won't do it, when I'm just in idle, it won't do it. Even if I rev it to said RPM range. And after it gets over the 2100 RPM mark, it doesn't do it! BLAH! I've serviced the transmission, AND the transfer case, with no sign of metal in the fluid.

It could be converter shutter. It's a 2004 F150, Lariat. 110,000 miles. No loss in power, or performance, just an irritating noise. I thought it could be cats, heat or dust shields. I replaced the cats, removed dust shields, drove it a mile or so, same noise.....

U joints anyone?

Could it be the IWE's trying to engage from low vacuum?

Hey GLC!

So, I looked into the IWE, I have no idea what that stands for, BUT, I found it, on firewall behind my battery, unplugged the power connection, restarted my truck, took it for a test drive, and wouldn't ya know it, no noise, no rattle, no nothing. I went ahead, and ordered a replacement. After I get the old one off, i'm gonna check the vaccum lines, and make sure there are no leaks along the way. Hopefully, my hubs are ok, and can hang until I do a complete brake job this fall.

Anyway, it's members like you that make this forum so helpful, and useful. Without people like you, who are willing to share their experience, we'd all be no-where.

Thank You So Much!

Izzy

UPDATE:

So I checked the vacuum on the each hub, the driverside, which had water or dirt in it when i pulled it off, has about 12", the passenger side has 7". I pulled the next connection up in the fender well, and it was still reading 7".

The new IWE sol. is 22 bucks, but comes with the cover, which mine does not, so I went ahead and replaced it. I'm gonna track down the vacuum leak on monday, i have to work tomorrow, and i'm on gf duty tonight lol.

Well, after following a very informative thread on the IWE system, I found my problem to be, my actuators. Is there a rebuild kit for those? Any one have the part number for the IWE, or a good source?
