Rumble strip sounds, then tonight no reverse, had to od off to get home

, I swear I've been hearin that exact same noise as rumbling strips occassionaly recently then tonight this happened : " I have an 01 4.6 2wd F150. Tonight I lost reverse, and while driving on interstate it was like the transmission would kick into nuetral. I could pull over go to park then drive maybe a tenth of a mile then it would High Rev like in nuetral, then the Transmission would kick back in for about a tenth of a mile. I turned od off and was able to drive 39 miles home and was able to do 60 mph instead of 30 mph. The first issue tonight when I left a stop sign there was a jeek like something finally kicked in, then a mile later it was like tranny kept popping in nuetral then it would drive then high rev, my band aid to get it home was turning on the tow oackage, no reverse at this point regardless of od off button, and forget doing 45 mph unless od is off. No check engine or warning lights are displayed" So get ready.......

Thanks , I was quoted 1800.00 including replace rear seal, but at 249,700 miles I can't decide what to do. I've had it for 2.5 years put over 50,000 miles on it in 2 and a half years and only replaced oul, tires, battery, radiator, brakes, and a window motor recently. It does have an oil leak about a quart a month.
I've changed spark plugs once.
I just can't decide what I want to do.

If I have 2001 f150 and I'm having transmission rebuilt would it make this job lot cheaper and quicker? Another words I would have them replace rear seal with transmission removal so would they be right there and easier to replace oil pan gasket too?

I'm adding about a qt of oil a month, not sure if I should replace vehicle or transmission since it has nearly 250, 000, thoughts of reason????

How is the engine? Buying another used truck is always a crap shoot. It's a financial decision that only you can make for yourself.

I've used a qt of oil in a month, which is why I wanted seal and gasket replaced simultaneously. I belive it's the sun gear that we think out. I'm still driving with od off, no reverse. I saw a lady on YouTube that has went 7 years by simply pushing od off everytime. It's been a good truck to me for 2000 dollars nearly 60,000 miles putting truck at 250,000 miles.
I'm thinking of getting a better fuel efficiency vehicle and keeping truck for local and light towing. In 2.5 years maybe 500 dollars in parts battery, radiator, minor parts.
I can't decide what secondary vehicle to get....maybe get a 2nd vehicle and run my truck into the ground or light use until I can afford anot her transmission or find someone who can and will install a used transnission. It's been an awesome truck.

Now is probably not the time to buy another vehicle, people posting 1989 ford rangers for 3500 dollars, yes I mean 1989 year rangers for 3500 dollars, and f150 needing timing chains, engines or transmissions for over 2000.00 dollars 1999 and older trucks.
