4r70w's compatible with 1996 F150

Hello all. I'm about to undertake a transmission swap in my 1996 f150 5.0 with eec-v. I CANNOT find another 96 with a 4r70w or an explorer with one either. I went to a trans builder today and asked if a 94-95 will work. He says no. I do know the AODE/W came in the mid 90s Ford's with the 302 but I just need some confirmation on if it will work or not. The heat sheild next to the cat on the passenger side says clearly AODE/W. And I 100% know beyond any doubt that mine is EEC-V. The guy said the difference is in the valvebody and it's electrically different.. so anyone whose dealt with the 96 half tons transmissions please chime in and guide me
thank you

The AODE-W was replaced by the 4R70W. Essentially the same transmission but not a direct swap.

1996 was the first year of OBD2. It's possible a 4R70W out of a 97 or 98 F150 with a 4.2 V6 and same drive system (2wd or 4wd) may swap, ask your tranny guy about that. Bellhousing pattern is the same between the 5.0 and 4.2.

Glc I've read the 4.2s had less clutches but most everything I've read has contradicted information. But he looked at it and said something about mine having two speed sensors in the trans. I in fact do not. I have a vss on the rear end and a plug off the side of the main case. On the tail housing where the Speedo cable would go I just have a metal cover bolted over the hole. The newer 4r70ws I've seen from say an 01 f150 or mustang has a sensor in the speedo cable hole. Again mine doesnt. It's just a cover.
