Is it fatal?

Recently first and second gear have gotten a lot noisier. It started just as shifting into second sounding kinda like a cd spinning in a disc drive and now it is making the noise in first and second almost all the time, in gear and when shifting. I'm not sure but I do not think any of the other gears make the noise, it's hard to tell over the exhaust. Is it just the synchros or bearings? I pretty much need the transmission to last at least until April or I won't have a truck or the money to fix it.

Russo, if it is idling in neutral is there a noise? If so does it go away when you push in the clutch?

My thought is maybe the input bearing. But I've also seen the needle bearings go in the input shaft and get something simular.

Also is there any kind of adjustment on that new shifter you put in? Could just need to be dialed in. And pay attention to the reverse gear if there is any adjustments.

Just throwing it out there, I'm sure Steve knows what to do.

The only adjustments were to prevent over shifting and honestly they didn't even do anything with the transmission in gear the stop bolt was the whole way in and barely touching the shifter.
And I'm not 100% sure I haven't driven my truck since Saturday but, it does make the noise with the clutch in holding the stick hard left and down but not actually in second.

Might want to drain just a little bit of the fluid and see if it's got metal flakes in it. If it's sliver colored flakes then I would suspect a bearing, if it" bronze colored then maybe a syncro.

I'm assuming that the fluid is up to snuff and not low.

See if steve chimes in and what he has to say.

Good luck.

I added fluid when I put the shifter in. Is it possible that too much fluid would cause problems?

I don't know. But how can you get too much in? Did you fill it through the regular filler hole?

I did when I put the new clutch in awhile back and since it leaks some I just added some through the top of the shifter housing, it's easier and doesn't make a mess.

Well then maybe pull the filler plug and see if it runs out. Let it drain down to the proper level and see if that "fixes" it.

I haven't gotten a chance to check to fluid, it makes noise in nuertral when the stick is pulled hard left, clutch in or not.

If the transmission is overfilled drain it to the proper level. The Hurst shifter does transmit transmission noise a lot more than the OEM. I would loosen the stopper bolts and see if the noise goes away.

Overfilling it likely didn't cause it to make noise. Might make a mess from seals or gaskets or push trans grease out front seal into clutch area with built up pressure from heat if way overfull.

Did your Hurst shifter eliminate any rubber or other soft points?

Look at the picture,

There on the stock shifter, is there any rubber or soft bushings there near that clamp like affair on the stock shift? Also, the longer, heavier stock shift will itself deminish noise from mass alone.

Yes, it will.

Reading this thread, the comment he made about doing it in neutral, clutch in or out, shifter pulled to left ..... made me think same thing but I didn't know he had a Hurst.

My old '69 Dodge Dart Swinger 340 with 4 spd had a Chrysler installed Hurst shifter in it, factory. One day the stick pulled out of the shifter on a gear change. Loked close, it was originally simply set down in the shifter with a molded hard rubber block filling in. Otherwise, just exactly like a Hurst aftermarket Comp Plus shifter, just rubber isolated instead of bolted with two 3/8" bolts.

Drove it a week with a pair of visegrips clamping the stick in place then I pulled it and shifter out and wore out several bits drilling holes to mount the Hurst stick like the aftermarket shifters.

After that, I too picked up a lot of noise.
