I did it! A Manual Shift Expedition

Hey All,
I have nearly finished my manual shift expedition project. I am now driving it minus a speedo, but everything else seems to be working well. I went with the zf 5 speed out of a f-250. I really like the super low first gear in this trans, I usually take off in second. It was a fairly straight forward swap and it can be done with a few modifications, exhaust, driveshaft lengths, body lift, etc. If you have a 5.4 f-150 and want the manual shift this is the way to go. I love it.

Really? i swapped a 5spd in my truck the only thing i had to change was the whole in the floor. Im sure you could have just gotten a manual tranny out of an f150 and it would have been alot easier

:lurk: what about the console

That is true, but the ZF 5 and ZF 6 hold up to the power so much better. The ones in the 150's are cheaply built. Do wanna see pics as well.

what year truck did you put it in?

Hey All,
It is a 2001 Ford Expedition. I went with the ZF because I wanted something that would hold up to towing. I pull my 74 bronco and trailer with this rig and wasn't having much luck with the 4r100 auto. I bought a console out of an f-150 and removed my old one. There is one piece that was used for mounting the old one that protrudes through the carpet. I still need to do something about the hole where the old console used to mate up with the lower dash. There is 3.5" difference between the zf5(shorter) and the 4r100 so the rear driveshaft had to be lengthened ($120.00). The front needs to be shortened(not done yet). I bought a new flywheel ($150.00), clutch set ($350.00) and master/ slave cylinder combo (f-250) ($170.00). A friend gave me the pedals as well as the rod for the clutch master cylinder (rod needs to be from f-150). I paid about $170.00 for the 2 inch body lift and got the transmission from a local yard for $720.00. The center console came from the same yard for $20.

I need a new pad, but the price on the pedals was right.

Note the exposed metal bracket from the old console behind the shifter, also the wire loom is for the cd changer I have yet to re-install.

You can see the place I need to cover under the dash.

As you can see this is not a show truck. I built this truck this way because I use (abuse) it.

I figured I had better include a picture of the bronco, or it might not exist either.

Excellent job! With all the $$ I spent on used replacement M5OD's I could have done this mod.

thats awesome.. i like it.. i know your bronco is your toy but do you have any intentions of cleaning the interior of the expy lol ??

five0merc 10-14-2010 11:20 AM

That's a good looking expy!! Love the bronco a well!! My dad and I built a 76 bronco from the frame up in our garage. They are fun toys!!! We put a zf5 in the bronco.

JMC 10-14-2010 12:17 PM

Could you post pics of the drivetrain?

five0merc 10-14-2010 06:51 PM

Here's our bronco. Not to steal your thread. This was before we got the top and nerf bars and bumbers painted black. And this one gets used too. Got it's share of scrapes from brush and what not while out in the fields.

awsome, but is there a reason you didn't opt for the 6 speed over the 5 speed?

I'm considering this same swap in my F-250 but I'm sure I want to go with the 6 speed for towing
