stand alone controller box question
stand alone controller box question
I'm going to have a spare 5.4/4r70 in the few months, due to a built motor/trans going into the green truck
well my dad wants the 351 Cleveland out of my F-250, and I was thinking I could install the 5.4/4t70 into my F-250 using this http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eB...K%3AMEWAX%3AIT
with adapter plates
that covers the motor functions, but what about the transmission?
ideally I'd like to have a manual transmission, but the 4r70 would work and I wouldn't complain too much about it (once I got a shifter sorted out) and this would operate the transmission http://www.baumannengineering.com/tcs.htm, which leads to need to consider how I'm going to run a speedometer would I need to change over to a newer instrument cluster or can I use my 1965 instrument panel?? I already have a spare lightning cluster and a "normal" F-150 cluster if needed
and YES I have emailed bauman just waiting on a response, from them
with the 5.4 I could find a vehicle in a wrecking yard and transfer over the power steering and a/c stuff to maintain the F-250 as a "wife friendly" vehicle that yield better mileage than it does now and still keep the towing capacity...
If I have to swap over an ECM and do the cluster install, I'll find a F-250 with a 6 speed manual and use that
any and all experience would be appreciated thanks

I can only speak on that controller from experience. IF he only plans to use that controller as a daily driver type of thing and isn't worried about having a performance setup or super precise, factory like operation then it should work ok. The only problems I have seen are that they are not able to keep up with a true performance setup, mostly in torque converter lockup operations, and they are not a good option for someone expecting to have their transmission operate the way it will when it's controlled by a factory box that uses several sensors and has a gazillion parameters in the software to provide the most unobtrusive operation possible.
They do work though and they do what they do well and dependably. I always said that is a great controller for someone who wants to put a newer transmission into an older RV or something where it is driven under reasonably limited operational parameters. That might be pretty close to your plan here actually.
I am definitely not saying that it's a bad product either. I am just more saying that it's the cheapest control option out there, so make sure your expectations are in check with that. I think it does a decent job for what you pay for it. If you have greater demands then there are products available that might better meet those demands.

thanks for the response, the truck gets used for fencing and hauling loads of wood and hay (not too big of loads)
I understand there are better boxes out there and I will shop around some more
is there a way to add a spedometer cable to a 4r70 transmission??

I think their box may actually be a decent choice for what you need. It does work and deos what it does well enough. It just doesn't work close enough to the level of factory control that I like to see.
On the speedo, I honestly have no idea at all. I think there has to be something though because I have had several shops purchase these transmissions for swaps into old hot rods. I can't imagine that all of them are switching to electronic instrumentation.

I'll wait until I hear back from them 'cause the carbed intake and this standalone box will make the wiring a whole lot easier (as long as I can do somthing for the speedometer)
I am sure you can use an AOD speed sensor as long as it will attach to the cable. They are darn cheap and you can get one at the local parts store to try out for fitment to the cable.
Then it's just a matter of figuring out what speedo gear you need.

You did not say what transfer case you are planning on using, but the speedometer cable will need to be connected to the output of the t-case. If there is no gear to drive the cable, it can most likely be added. This would allow you to use the stock '65 speedo.
Thanks for the inquiry.

looks like the shift linkeage/od controller won't be too hard to fab in if I want to run a console with cup holders...
I'll look around and see what I can find for like an aerostar van or something with a longer floor mounted shifter

the other good news is taht a 2 wheel drive ZF 6 speed will also bolt in, if I use a divorced NP205 transfer case....
