Grinding into 3rd gear...
I have a 2001 F150 4.2l V6 with 107,000 miles and a 5 speed manual transmission. Lately, when its been hotter out and I've been driving my truck for a bit it has a problem with 3rd gear. I shift it into 3rd gear and it grinds the gears for a half second then slips into gear. I know i have the clutch all the way down, I just dont know what's going on. Anyone know what the problem could be? anything helps!
Thanks in advance.

I had the exact same problem withe the same year of truck, I finally pulled the trans and went and had it rebuilt, its almost back in, Ill let you know if it solved it. I was getting advice from different sources that is was the 3rd gear solenoid. I drove with the 3rd gear grinding for 2 yrs, damn annoying aint it.

It should not be a clutch problem if it will go into reverse with out grinding since it has no syncronizer. Very doubtfull a fluid change will do anything. More than likley your syncronizer is bad. It could just a blocker ring but with all the labor involved replace the whole thing. Also check the gear where the slider engages the gear for wear. ASE master tech.
