Transfer Case error message

I have a 1997 F150 with a 5.4 V8, Auto. I recently had a mechanic check out the transmission and 4Wd and he discovered no problems other than an error reading coming from the transfer case: code T1867. He did not have the ability to further explore this message and said that the dealership service department would be my only other option.

The original reason for my visit to the mechanic was a random drop into 4WD low while cruising at 30 MPH on paved streets. I have the on dash rotating 4WD switch and it was still in 2WD when this occurred. Any info on the error code or similar 4WD problems would be great! Would my best option be to take it to the dealer?

You must have misunderstood the letter in the code. It should be a P not a T.
P1867 Transfer Case Contact Plate General Circuit Failure. The one or more of the contact plates in the Transfer case shift motor assembly are open or shorted to ground. Replacing the shift motor is the only repair.

Got the same info you gave me from the mechanic today. Thanks for your reply.
