Drain plug kits?

Has anyone installed one of those drain plug kits in your stock pan? I need to service my transmission and was thinking about installing one or those drain plug kits from Troyer or B&M. Any leaks with these?

I just drilled a 1/2 inch hole then welded a 1/2 fine thread nut to the outside of the pan on the side. Short 1/2 fine bolt and nylon washer seals it up great. Much easier to change trans fluid now.

That Troyer fitting you showed should work fine as a non-welded solution.

There's even a Ford OEM pan with a drain plug in it, sold to places like U-Haul.

If our "image server" ever stops being "busy" that thread has links to pictures of said pan. It might be a good idea to put your aftermarket plug in the same place the factory did.

If you do install one, make sure you get a rubber o-ring to seal it. Those hard plastic rings that come with the kit WILL leak. Ask me how I know! I have used washers with rubber inner rings that were made to use with engine oil pan drain plugs to seal them also.

Thumbs up

I welded a 1/4" thread-o-let onto my pan.

Be sure to follow the advice given and WELD the drain in. I used the white plastic washer also and I am paying for it with a drip. Not much, but enough to be a PITA. Uses 1/2 cup fluid each 3-4 months. Not enough to worry bout yet.

I think I am just going to skip it this time. I will buy a new aluminum pan when the time comes to do the service again. Thanks for all your replies!
