Shifter/interlock problem

I have a 1994 F150, auto,2wd,L6. Upon shifting into reverse a pop/snap sound was heard and the column shifter went "limp". I was able to get R/N/D and could start the engine in nuetral.Could not get the key out and yes, the brake lights work. Disassembled housing to have a look, noticed nothing unusual, cable in good shape as is lever at trans. Did find a small chunck of wht plastic, no idea where it came from.Reassembled housing and noticed it would go into park! Can remove key, BUT now I can't get it out of Park . An easy fix would be nice but at this point I just want to avoid a towing bill and take it to a mechanic. Thanks!
