Introduction and Question

Hi all. I'm a new lurker and potential poster. I just purchased a '93 F150 4X4, auto, X-tra cab. Nice to see a busy forum for my latest acquisition and I hope to glean as much info as I have on my other (BMW) boards.

And my question:

5.8L (351, right?) EFI, and the previous owner claims a rebuild with high-compression pistons and other quality parts, plus new synthetics in the engine and diff (maybe the t-case as well) but not the trans "yet". A Mallory Ignition box is also under the hood with a K&N.

A major problem arose when driving the rig home from purchase. On the highway, in OD, cruise set at ~75mph... all of a sudden, huge loss of power (enough to shut down the cruise control), temp had shot up to about 75% (had been 25% all day before this) and the CEL came on - all of which put me over on the shoulder. I knocked it into neutral immediately and rolled to about 5mph and everything seemed to come back to normal. Long story short is I spun a rod bearing (I think - there's a pretty good knock now). The engine didn't die and the damage seemed minimal, so I headed on.

Anyway, I limped all the way home and noticed something: if the trans was in OD, eventually it bogged down the engine again and again as above - to the point I just left it in 3rd ("D") without the OD button "on". And yes, I still have a loud knock.

I'm getting it looked at tomorrow, but is it possible that the OD bound up in some way (I think it's the E40D...?) and did damage to the engine? I'm a bit familiar with AODs (in a 4X4, no less) but I don't know how the OD function works in these newer ones. Could it bind up and kill an engine?

I'll do some searching on this topic as well. Thanks for any insight you guys can give.

Gary
