Transmission won't shirt to high gear

I own a 86' f150 auto 302ci. It has 87k original miles. All original parts. Truck won't shift to 4th gear or high gear. It takes forever to get to 40mph and
if you give too much gas it stalls. Truck accelarates in park, does not stall.

Is your exhaust very quiet? You may have a plugged cat converter.

the exhaust is quiet, but the pipe is rotted out where it bends around rear end. all
other pipes are good..muffler & head pipe. the cat seems good as there is exhaust coming
out. again the engine takes gas and rpm's when in park gear. my son says when placed in 4w the truck bucks. thank you for your interest and reply. I bought this truck from original owner and he took care of it.

I think your catalytic converter is plugged. It's also possibly a plugged fuel filter or a bad fuel pump.

If the exhaust is quiet with a rotted pipe, you most likely have a restriction somewhere. If you rev it up in park and hear any "whooshing" sound, that would confirm it. With a rotted pipe, it should sound raspy. Muffler shops have instruments that can tell if a cat is plugged without dropping them.

F-150 w/tranmission problems ?

Guys Thank You (glc & Mark k)
welll it's worse...truck barely starts, when it does it's for bucking and coughing moments. Had to jump start. Heavy smell of gas in motor compartment..under hood. At a stand still with possible cause...Would the cat's blockage if true...cause this symptom..
thanks again for ...advise.

86 f150 Running Good

Guys
Thanks for help...Had truck towed to shop..Mechanic changed
distributer shaft, ignition control module and spark plugs. Runs great...shifts to all gears and has good gas pedal response. Repairs not cheap but worth it. :) Now I need to fix this "blow by" problem , oil is spraying in motor compartment. Any suggestions out there...
