Trans is toast !!

Title sums it up. My trans gave up its ghost today. 1st gear works, kinda, with some horrible noises coming from it. Reverse, same thing. No other gears are working right now. Leading up to this, I was having a "odd" 4th gear problem I was trying to figure out. In 4th gear, my RPMS were all over the chart, forcing me to turn O/D off whenever driving. Today, on the way back from a quick last minute parts run, it started slipping real bad, then went into neutral. After that, 1st gear got me to the shop, screaming the whole way !

These were the only codes I could pull:

P2106 Thottle Actuator Control System

P0720 Output Shaft Speed Sensor Circuit.

Any suggestions for a beefy aftermarket trans ??

did you abuse the transmission at all, MT? are you still running the stock axle ratios front and back?

not sure if you know this, but these late model fords' computers are transmission -based, and cannot be forced via tuning to control another ford transmission, so swapping in another computer controlled transmission brings about complications...

i would just stick with a good rebuild, or a jasper reman. they are warranted for 3 years or 100k miles, whichever comes first.

Still running stock gearing. I know it didn't help, but these trans are plain WEAK from the factory. I know of plenty that have given out around the same mileage on stock F150's too. Oh well. I do tow, but trans temps never got over 205*, ever. Serviced regularly. Well taken care of.

It wouldn't be "another trans" but rather a beefed up 4r70 is what I am looking for. I think Klitch went that route. I don't want to put another POS stock trans back in the truck if I don't have to. Anything can be done, just gotta put the ole noggin to use.

** Will keep Jasper in mind though. Looks like a very reputable shop. You know what Ford's warranty is on reman ?

And thank you minimonster. I appreciate the reply man.

i would either do a semi-performance rebuild (i'm not sure of your power goals...) or the jasper. the jasper transmissions have a 3 year or 100k mile warranty.

i'm wondering if /when mine is going to give up the ghost. i've got around 50k miles on it, and 15k of them have been turning 35's on the stock gearing. it has been serviced though, and i NEVER do burnouts or anything. i've probably burnt the fluid offroad though, lol.

i know i need the 4.88's.

how many miles MT?

P2106 Thottle Actuator Control System (not sure, maybe clean the TB, or replace it)

P0720 Output Shaft Speed Sensor Circuit. (this code basically tells you that the transmission is slipping, and the output of the trans is a different speed then it should be in each gear)

Patman: 63k and some odd miles. And thanks for the heads up.

I do have an extended warranty, so I am calling them to see what they say about it. If they fight me too hard, I'll say some "choice words" and be done with em. Looks like I am going with a Monster trans. They seem beefy, and hopefully far more reliable then Fords factory version. (thanks for the tips Trim)

If extended warranty covers it, have them replace it, then go get you a monster trans, and sell off the reman that just got put in your truck.

My short experience at Land Rover says that extended warranty should cover it, but idk for sure

warranty says I have to take it out, and tear it down to find out what the issue is. WTF ? Waste of my time if you ask me. I deal with extended warranty damn near weekly, never had to tear it down. Simply R&R. Whatever, at least I will know what happened.

Looks like I am going with a monster trans. The SS mega monster version.

MercedesTech, what was your maintenance schedule? Do you have the tow package in your F150?

They gave me a 75k mile warranty on mine.

Will the 4r70 work with our 04+ PCM strategies MT? my stocker was a 4r75e.

Full fluid fluch every 30k. Also changed out the oil in the pan every oil change, about 3-4k. Running the maghytech deep dish trans pan. No tow package. That just means I don't have the large factory cooler. Seeing how my fluid temps never got over 205* I didn't feel the upgrade was necessary. I will be going with a larger trans cooler with aux fan this time around. Since its out, figure why not.

Looks like I may be having a local race shop beef mine up for me. It will let me be more hands on. They do some awesome work. It will take a little longer, but we are going all custom/aftermarket internals.

75k aint bad. The guys doing my rebuild will be giving me even longer, plus I know them personally, so I can bring it down whenever its acting up.

And ya, minimonster covered it. Mine came stock with the 4r70E. Replacing with the 4r70W.

I'll keep yall updated to what I get.
