4x4 problem

Hi guys , new to the forum. I have a 2000 ford f150 5 speed manual trans, 4x4 shifter on the floor. When i put the 4x4 shifter into 4 wheel drive the 4x4 light comes on with dash indicater. The shaft from the transfer case to the front pig is locked in. But the front tires are not locking up. I drove the truck the last 3 days with it locked in four wheel drive and finally this morning the front drives clunked (mildly) a couple of times and the four wheel drive kicked in ? I have never changed any front pig fluids or worked on the front pig. What would cause this problem??? Thnx Dave

What most likely happened is that over the years the front axle shift actuator motor seized up. When you shifted to 4x4 it stayed in the disengaged position. After a few days the vacuum overcame the corrosion and the front axle engaged and you now have 4x4. Get under the front and spray PB Blaster on the linkage and actuator rod of the vacuum motor. Check the vacuum lines for leaks. A leaking line will not allow sufficient vacuum to reach the motor and it will take a long time to complete the shift. Another possible cause is an improperly functioning solenoid on the firewall. The disengage solenoid vents vacuum to air when the 4x4 engages. If it is sticking and not venting it will not allow the engage side to shift.
