4 X 4 tutorial

2001 F-250, automatic, 5.4L with manual hubs and push button activation.

Any link to or explanation of the correct way to use and not abuse this system?

Can I shift on the fly if the hubs are prelocked?

Is it OK to use four wheel drive on dry pavement without risk of damage?

yes you can shift on the fly with the hubs pre locked as long as you are under 50mph. DO NOT use 4x4 on dry pavement! you will distroy the diffs and transfer case.

First, you do not have hubs that lock and unlock. On the 97-03, it is locking is done for the front axles at the diff.

Do not use on dry pavements except in a straight line.

You can shift into or out of 4hi up to 55, 4lo requires stopped, foot on brake and in neutral.

All this is in the owners manual. If you do not have one, you can download one for free at www. motorcraftservice.com in the owners manual section.

For more info on how the 4x4 system on the 97-03 works, see this thread and linked threads.

Check the front hubs on your F-250 to see if they have an Free or an Automatic position. If they have an automatic position you can leave them in the Automatic position. If they have a free position then you must have the hubs in the Lock position.
You can shift form 2Hi to 4Hi and back at speeds up to 55 mph. Contrary to the F-150 the electronic shift system in the F-250 is designed to be shifted when the vehicle is moving. There can be up to a 45 second delay before the indicator lights turn on. If you shift into 4hi when stopped you may have to start the vehicle moving before the shift is completed.
Shifts from 4Hi to 4Lo and back must be done with the vehicle stopped, in Neutral and with your foot on the brake.
Never shift into 4Hi with the rear wheels spinning.
Check your Owners Manual. If you don't have one you can down load one here. https://www.fleet.ford.com/maintenan...ls/results.asp
