Need diagnostic help!
Hey Guys,
I need help determining what's going on with my truck. I have a 2004 FX4 supercrew with 5.4L and 48,000 miles. More oftern than not, when I downshift I get a distinct "clunk" from the drivetrain. It occurs under part throttle and WOT and 4-3, 3-2, 3-1, 2wd or 4wd. Anytime really. My gut tells me it's a problem with the torque converter. The downshift will occur and almost instantly after the downshift the clunk happens therefore it doesn't seem directly related to the gear change, but more like when the TC locks up, it does so violently. The tranny shifts smoothly otherwise and I can detect no slippage.
I took it to the dealer to make sure it wasn't caused by one of the known issues for which there is a TSB. I even lubed the output spline to eliminate that as the culprit. The dealer, as usual was no help and wanted $250 just to drop the pan for further diagnosis. No thank you.
I was wondering if anyone else has experienced a similar problem, and if so what the culprit was. Again, I suspect the TC, but it could easily be the tranny itself or the transfer case. I don't think it's the differential.
Can you help a brother out? If I have to replace something, I'd rather not spend a bunch of cash chasing it down.
Thanks
Mark
