E40D fluid question
I put a new accumulator body (part # F6TZ-7G422-B) from the dealer in my '98 gas F150 with 143k miles and the E40D transmission. My old one was shifting hard from 2-3 and I figured it was a broken spring, which after taking it out was confirmed (broke in 4 pieces). When I drained the fluid, I also took out the TC plug and drained it. Searching around here it looks like specs for the E40D shows 16 quarts of fluid, but after adding just 9 quarts of Mercon fluid (running engine and shifting thru between 4 quarts at a time) my dipstick has fluid on it. I checked it 10 times to be sure because I didn't want to overfill. When I drove the truck it didn't want to get into 1st until I revved it and once I was going shifted great and my 2-3 problem is gone, but I'm thinking I'm probably still low on fluid (at least hoping - don't want to go thru that mess again) I'm thinking there's residual fluid in the tube that is showing up on the dipstick - it's not solid, but definitely there. Would low fluid cause the problem of getting going into 1st or do I have other problems now with the new accumulator body? I drove it around probably 2-3 miles trying to figure out what was going on - if I had low fluid could this cause damage?
It's probably too late now, but did you measure how much fluid you took out? In theory, that's how much fluid you would put back in..
It sounds like your method of drain and fill are correct.. It's just how you are reading the stick, and I can relate to the residue in the tube causing issues with reading the stick!
Best thing you can do is let it sit for a bit and then fire it back up and run thru the gears and with it still idling, check the level...
Good luck!

Update: I got home and counted the quarts I'd added and there were actually 10 empties. After adding 5 more quarts the dipstick reading was more obvious and I figured out how to push it in upside down so it didn't get the residual fluid from the tube. So, now with 15 quarts added I hit the road and it's shifting better than ever. Thanks again for the tips. Now on to the laundry list of other things I need to do on it....
