HURST shifter problems?

I have the Hurst 5 speed shifter in my 97 4x4 truck, and was wondering how many others out there have changed from stock? The main reason for me asking is that when shifting from 1st to 2nd I have no problem. But going from 2nd to 3rd while stomping the gas is almost impossible. No problem doing it while driving it normal. How does your Hurst shifter act between gears? Have you had to adjust it to get it to work smoothly? THANKS!!!

The M5OD transmission is not designed to be shifted quickly and hard. It's a light duty truck transmission, not a sports car transmission.

Does it grind or simply not go into gear? Worn out syncros will not spin up the gears fast enough at high rpm causing a grind. A bent or loose shift fork or a loose shift gate will keep the gears from engaging. The adjustment bolts on the shift tower may have come out of adjustment and are not allowing the shift lever to move all the way forward.

It did not do this with the stock shifter. I am not really shifting it faster than the syncro's will handle. What I am saying is that from 2nd to 3rd at higher rpm's, you can't hardly get it in gear no matter how slow you shift it untill the rpm's come down some. Driving slow, it changes gears with no problem. Sounds like I need to do some inspecting within the shifter. Also, isn't there a spring or something on the shifter to loosen it up some? Sorry, but I lost the papers that came with it. THANKS!!!

I don't think it is the shifter. The faster your engine is turning the greater the drop from 2nd gears high rpm to 3rd gears low rpm. There is almost a 2000 rpm change when you spin the engine to 5800 rpm in 2nd. There is only a 1100 rpm drop when you shift at 3200 rpm in 2nd. The higher you go in 2nd the larger the rpm drop and that causes the Syncros to have to spin faster to mesh the gears. Try the old shifter and see if it shifts better. remember that the Herst shifter reduces the throw by 30%. The means you will need more force/leverage to shift gears.

Might as well give it a shot and see what happens I guess.
