Manually shifting an Automatic?

My buddy has a Dudge Ram 1500 with the auto tranny. I noticed while riding with him earlier that he treats his auto tranny like a manual. He puts it in 1, takes off, shifts to 2, then when up to speed he shifts to Drive. He does all this without letting off the throttle at WOT!?!?! Its a cool idea to be able to take control of your shift times but isn't there a good chance he could mess somethign up?

No, because it's either going to upshift anyway or the rev limiter is going to kick in.

It's the same thing as the tranny shifting on its own, he's just telling it when to shift. I have the center console shifter, they have this layout right here, along with how the lockouts work. Trigger Down means you have to pull the trigger to go down the shift pattern, same for Trigger Up but to go Up.

P Trigger Down + Brake Pressed
R Trigger Up, No Trigger Down
N Trigger Up, No Trigger Down
D Trigger Up, Trigger Down
2 No Trigger Up, No Trigger Down
1 No Trigger Up

And there's an O/D On/Off switch right next to it. I prefer to let the tranny and my tune do its job though.
