4r70w options

Need to know what my options are for race built 4r70w trans that will work with my oddball year 97. trans failed today after a month of abuse by a racebuilt L up front of it.

As I understand, in 97 the E4OD was used behind the 5.4L It'd take some scrounging and rewiring/PCM-work but would that be a possibility?
I asked a local Ford mech about going E4OD on my 97 4x4 but he talked me out of it as it not being a drop-in swap.

I've never been a big fan of the C4/AOD/AODE/4R70W and much prefer the old C6/E4OD trannies. Never understood why they put that scrawny little thing behind a truck engine...even if all I've got is the little ole 4.6L.

i got a 5.4 lightning swapped in front with tuning for that pcm so im not real keen on swapping trans/computers for the reason of tuning. the electrical im not scared of too horribly bad. but yes, the headache factor would be a turn off for the e4od.

not sure if a monsterbox is the route to go. this motor in front of it has some major torque, i dont know when the last time i seen a truck loaded down still light tires up at 25mph rolls (at least 5k# trailer plus some additional payload, shoulda weighed it since it bend my drophitch). although it may be harder for those guys to squirm and try to find reasons to blame me for failure of their unit?

i could try to find a local (general NW area/ WA state mostly) guy and see if the guy hmm and ha's about the idea. or if i get someone thats gonna brag it up until it fails then blame me. my basic fear here is the builder getting his money then just blowing me off if it fails. no 30 day down my driveway ****.

Have you considered a 4R100 swap?

Phil

yes, just not totally keen on the idea because of the fact it requires pcm swap. which means i would have to pay for tuning for the lightning swap i did, again. my only gripe about it really aside from all the unknowns.

the MB sounds pretty good again IF they have good guarantee's.

Those are sweat! - If I had a built motor - ..... - They monsterize the E4OD/4R100 BUT! Do they even bother w/4R70w ? I wouldn't

klitch - there was a guy who got a built 4r75 that he replaced his 4r70 with, the builder re-pinned a 4r70 harness so he could use the 4r70 ECM. check his thread is here

, PILOT- (mark) is running one in his turbo F-150 the 966 rwhp truck

whats the diff btwn 70/75 aside from electrical? i thought the ratings were 700/750 between the 2. so im not understanding how the 75 would be that much better? or are you referring to a built 75 being a better start point?

the repin offer is cool, but i think i can handle that. i've been able to pull pins on my ecm, my maf and the probes vaf/map or whatever they call it. also that seems like a good price, where is he located? i couldnt find that.

stoffer 06-22-2008 11:01 AM

I think a built 4r75 would be a better base but I have no idea about the fitment issues.
I too am considering the 4r75 swap in my 'ole procharged truck but it's a 2 squealer so I don't have the transfer case issues.

Klitch 06-22-2008 11:06 AM

hmm t-case could be a major issue. didnt think of that. although mine's not in the best shape. still rather not spend more than i have to.

here's one of marks dyno sheets

he's the only one I know of that's running a monster box 4r70 and he makes a bit more power than you are

Klitch 06-22-2008 12:24 PM

HEY! i can buy bigger pulleys LOL

BlacknGold 06-22-2008 02:33 PM

I plan on sending mine to dirty dog performance. He does 4r70w and it was $2500 for a rebuild that would handle 500 rwhp and be able to tow near 8,000lbs. That was with a 12 inch tripple plate 2000 rpm stull converter. Seems like a good deal to me though I dont know if he does cores because I cant realy have my truck down that long. But you have a beater so it would not be that big of a deal.

600Polaris 06-22-2008 05:08 PM

i got similar to that, also they took the plate where there was two springs and changed it to four. took out all of the aluminum and changed it to steel. you can get it built up pretty heavy duty, but if you do get it built up it will shift VERY hard. mine hits hard so it will squeal the belt and when wet sqwak the tires at WOT, its a little 4.6 so not much power. but you can notice the difference when towing that you have a better tranny. also a bigger external mounted cooler and filter helps too which they added.

it came with the 2000 stall converter and shift kit, bigger lines n all
