No, they are not the same. If the trans requires MERCON V, then that's what it has to have to live. MERCON will cause problems in that trans.

Bingo, Mercon V minumum which is a semi-synthetic. You could go a full synthetic too, which brand I don't know (never really see much besides the Mercon V and Mercon/ Dextron 3). The key is Mercon V requirements.

Will the dexron3/mercron nappa fluid meet the mercon 5 or should he just have it all flushed and put all new mercon 5 fluid in

Use AMSOIL ATF and you don't have to worry about mixing or mis-matching fluids. Superior fluid anyways!!

Read the bottle. If it does not specifically say it meets Mercon V specs, flush it.

Amsoil, Mobil 1, Lucas Oil, Royal Purple, Red Line.....they all make good fluids.

You are going to change your fluids out and run it for at least 3 years? Consider the extra $1 - $3 a quart for high end synthetics as extra insurance and "peace of mind". And, if you believe all the claims, the fluids pay for themselves in better lubrication, increased mileage, and higher performance. Royal Purple is known to have clips all over the internet, and segments on Spike TV's Powerblock, which show dyno proven gains by simply switching from mineral oils.
