If you are going to drain the pan and the torque converter you need around 18 quarts.

You might also want to read this article. It's another way to change the fluid, and is VERY effective at getting out even more than draining the pan and torque converter.

E4ODs ALWAYS required MERCON fluid. They were not changed to MERCON V in '92 like the AOD, AODE, and 4R70W when it came out in '93.

Having said that, Ford has discontinued MERCON fluid. You'll still find it for a while. Ford changed MERCON V so that it is now backwards compatible with all applications that used to use MERCON.

So the real answer is yes, MERCON is fine for the E4OD, but now MERCON V is the recommended fluid.

And here i thought chevy can get complicated at times I have had the oil for about 5 years in the shed. I dont mind buying different if it will be better. I hear i have a very good trany if i change the Fluid and filter reguarly.

To answer your question, I have a 4R100, which is basically an updated E4OD. I need to change the trans fluid soon, and I have some older MERCON fluid. That's what's going into it. If I still own it when it needs the next change I won't have any MERCON left, so then I'll use MERCON V.

THAT is not recommended - you should not mix Mercon and Mercon V. You are going to need more than 12 quarts for a complete drain anyway.
